An-n-n-n-n-d it’s go time. I was going to describe each “tip” in more detail but I got lazy. I suppose that’s the sixth tip. If it’s hard, give up right away

[He is] Travis Stearns, a freelance graphic designer, typographer, and art director hard at work in the forests of Minnesota. For the last two years [he] was a designer at the award-winning, internationally [renowned] YouWorkForThem, creating typefaces and stock art.

[He's] had the pleasure to work with some great people at Nylon Magazine, Wired Magazine, Mass Appeal, AIGA Minnesota, IAmSound Records, Swindle Magazine, Ghostly International, Ubiquity Records, Threadless, Internasjonal/Full Pupp, and Wurst.

In 2008, [he] was selected and featured as one of Print Magazine’s 20 New Visual Artists.

Check out his shit here.

Just watched a Louis C.K. bit re: children asking why. Thought I might apply it to a logo I’m working on. I won’t edit this. Here goes:
I can’t think of what to do for this logo I’m working on.
Why?
I guess I really haven’t sat down and started sketching out some ideas.
Why?
I haven’t made the time.
Why?
I’ve been putting it off.
Why?
Because I might not come up with a great idea.
Why?
Because I don’t always come up with great ideas. People don’t always come up with great ideas.
Why?
Because good/great ideas are few and far between.
Why?
If every idea was great, then, by definition, no idea would be great.
Why?
Because great is only distinguished by what is not great.
Why?
Because we live in a world/universe of dualities (is that the right word?)
Why?
Perhaps it’s more human comprehension – maybe, for some reason, we’re wired to see things in terms of what they are not.
Why?
Perhaps we cannot see things for what they truly are. Perhaps we are removed at some level from “pure being”.
Why?
Perhaps there is a god (sic) after all.
Why?
While, in my opinion, it’s absurd to believe in a god, it’s also equally absurd to believe in no god.
Why?
A “point” seems absurd. But no “point” also seems absurd.
Why?
Maybe looking for a point is missing the point.
Why?
It’s one thing to live “for the moment”, but I couldn’t just do that. With no drive. With no impetus to live in the moment. I’d look up definitions for motivation, but I promised myself I wouldn’t cheat on this one.
Why?
Because I Google everything, just to make sure it’s right.
Why?
Because I’m insecure.
Why?
Because I’ve tied myself to my craft for too long. If my craft fails me, I will have nothing.
Why?
Well, I’m at 316 words. Let’s stop there. Fun exercise.

Typography is extended copywriting == successful typography. Simply ask yourself the following:
Who’s saying it?
Say you’re working on a piece for a real estate client, and the copy is as follows (I just made this up, so bear with me):
Breathe easy. It’s better here.
My gut tells me that this is woman between the age(s) of 35-40. She’s calm, rational, confident, and above all, relaxed. I’d jump to a thin variant of Helvetica Neue. Maybe gold on brown to exude a sense of calm “earthiness”. Bam. Done. There are, of course, other options besides Helvetica, so perhaps additional research might yield a more interesting solution… but I’m just sayin’.
Just for shits:

The gold was a bit much, so I went with more of a cream colour. And, on second though, I’m not entirely sure if this is a man or a woman. But everything else still stands.

YouWorkForThem. If they sold food, I think I’d be set. Waiting for my shirt (above) to arrive…

Yeay! I’m finally finding decent material for this little guy. Check it out and let me know what you think. Oh, and I’m stealing all these little sprites from here.
